The Lisle Cemetery

900 block of Ogden Avenue
Open for visitation every day of the year
Normal Hours: 8:30am-5pm (open until 7pm May 1-Aug. 31)

The Lisle Cemetery is one of the oldest registered cemeteries in DuPage County, and one of the oldest cemeteries in the State of Illinois.

Five of the first eleven earliest settlers to stake property claims during the 1830’s are buried in this quaint, rustic cemetery of pioneer origin. Luther Hatch (settled 1832), James Crombie Hatch (settled 1832), A. B. Chatfield (settled 1834), John Graves (settled 1835), and George Willard (settled 1835) are buried here.

The cemetery property was donated for non-sectarian community use by James Crombie Hatch, a civic-minded New England Puritan from the Azel Hatch family of New Hampshire. James and his brother Luther were the first settlers to the Village of Lisle (proper) in 1832. Their ancestors are believed to have been in the second company of Pilgrims that arrived in America in 1626.

For many years, the cemetery property was cared for personally by James C. Hatch and then later by the Lisle Cemetery Association, officially organized in 1883. The Village of Lisle acquired ownership of the property in 1987 after the property became too much of a burden for Lisle volunteer Bill McKibben, the unofficial "custodian," who had been maintaining the property since 1957 as a labor of love.

Since accepting ownership the Village of Lisle has been committed to the restoration and preservation of this beautiful 2+ acre rural pioneer cemetery which people treasure as a daily reminder of their own heritage.

Purchasing lots and plots: If you are interested in purchasing a cemetery lot or burial plot, please contact Public Works Department at 630-271-4180. They will be more than happy to discuss your needs and show you what the Lisle Cemetery has to offer.
