CURBSIDE RESIDENTS
GARBAGE DAY COLLECTION TIMESCollection is every Tuesday except during major holidays.*
All materials should be placed at the curb after 6 p.m. the night before.
Collection hours are
from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on
Tuesdays.
Three separate trucks will normally be driving by your home to collect your refuse,
yard waste (bagged & bundled) and recyclables.
Collection will be on the same day, but not necessarily at the same time.
It may also be necessary for Allied Waste to send out a special truck/crew later
in the day to remove bulky or heavy large items.
*Place garbage, yard waste and recyclables out on Wednesday if a
major holiday (New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day,
Thanksgiving Day, or Christmas Day) falls on either Monday or Tuesday
GARBAGE, USING STICKERS
- Garbage must be placed in sealed, plastic bags that are 33-gallon size or smaller
- Affix a “refuse only” sticker to the outside of the bag
- Wrap the sticker around the neck of the bag during cold weather to keep the sticker in place
You will NOT receive a monthly garbage bill in the mail; you pay for the services rendered when you buy a sticker
Each bag of garbage must not exceed 60 pounds in weight
There is no limit to the amount of refuse you place at the curb,
as long as it is properly prepared and a refuse sticker is attached to each bag
If you have problems with raccoons or other animals getting into your trash,
you may place your plastic garbage bag, with sticker affixed to it, into a regular metal
or plastic can. Do not put a sticker on the can; one sticker must be affixed to each plastic bag.
Large items, such as old sofas and beds, will be picked up if you place a refuse sticker on each large item.
The term “White Goods” refers to common household appliances such as refrigerators, stoves and washing machines.
They were called white goods back in the 1950’s because they were manufactured in white enamel. State regulations require that materials which pose a potential hazard to the environment, such as refrigerants and mercury switches, be removed from white goods prior to their being disposed of.
For this reason, your white goods will be picked up separately from the rest of your waste. White goods pick-up will probably occur toward the end of the work day. Please call Allied Waste at 630-964-3232 the day before pickup if you plan to dispose of a refrigerator, freezer, hot water heater, dishwasher, stove, washing machine or dryer. Remember, each appliance must have a “Refuse Only” sticker attached.
Miscellaneous Items
If you have items that won't fit inside a garbage bag, such as old mini-blinds or curtain rods, you may bundle them with duct tape, rope, or fiber twine and attach a “Refuse Only” sticker to the bundle. The bundle should be no longer than 5 feet in length and the total diameter of the bundle should be 18 inches or less.
Each bundle must not exceed 60 lbs. in weight.
RECYCLING
There is no limit to the amount of materials you place at the curb for collection, as long as it is properly prepared.
The LEAP Curbside Program is a two-sort program (Paper and Non-Paper), meaning one recycling container should contain all paper products and the other container should contain all non-paper products. We suggest that you purchase a minimum of two recycling bins, one for each type of material. Not all recycling bins are manufactured alike.
Did you know that special plastic is used to manufacture outdoor recycling containers?
Properly manufactured bins are constructed using a special formula of plastics so that the bins will withstand extreme outdoor temperatures without cracking. In Illinois, we have extremely cold winters; some store-bought recycling bins are not guaranteed to stand up to sub-zero temperatures.
18-gallon blue LEAP recycling bins are available for sale, at cost, at the Lisle Village Hall Business Office. You can purchase replacement bins, additional bins, bin lids or even wheel kits to make the bins easier to move to the curb.
Call the Business Office at 630-271-4100 for current prices.
(The LEAP bins offered for sale by the Village meet industry standards for outdoor use.)
If you buy a bin or bins from a retail store, please purchase bins that are
- 20-gallons or less in size so the recycling truck driver can lift the container up and into the truck.
- Guaranteed not to crack in cold weather to help you avoid the cost of replacing your containers frequently.
- Rectangular shaped to aid the recycling truck driver in physically dumping the materials into the appropriate compartment on the truck.
- Blue in color, which is the official color chosen by the recycling industry and is easily recognized as your recycling container.
- Marked with the official recycling symbol (3 arrows) on the exterior. If they aren't marked, please mark them yourself with outdoor paint
- We also suggest that you paint your street address on your bins so that if they are blown into a neighbor's yard, you can easily identify and retrieve them. Additionally, do not put recyclables out on extremely windy days unless you've taken steps to ensure that your materials are secure in your bin (you can always put the recyclables out the following week). On questionable days, put out a half-filled rather than overflowing container to reduce the chance of littering your neighborhood with paper or plastics. Recycling bin lids will help reduce littering on a windy day.
YARD WASTE
The State of Illinois prohibits landfilling of yard waste. The Village of Lisle recommends that you dispose of yard waste on your own property by cutting your grass with a mulching lawn mower, by chipping wood products (and using the chips as mulch around trees and bushes), and by composting the "green stuff" and using the by-product, humus, to improve the soil in your garden.
Literature describing lawn mulching and composting is available at no charge at the Lisle Village Hall Business Office. The Village Code contains a few restrictions covering composting, so please ask for a copy before you design your composting pile.
Collection of Yard Waste
If the need arises, pickup and disposal (composting) of yard waste is available for a fee through weekly curbside services provided by Allied Waste from the second Tuesday of March through the second Tuesday of December, annually.
The composting facility does not accept yard waste during the winter months.
Grass clippings, leaves, dead flowers, weeds & small shrubbery trimmings must be placed in 30-gallon Kraft paper bags. Purchase “Yard Waste Only” stickers and affix a sticker to the outside of each bag. Each bag of yard waste must not exceed 60 pounds in weight.
Branches
Bundle branches with a biodegradable natural fiber twine and attach a "Yard Waste Only" sticker to the bundle. Branches should be no larger than 2 inches in diameter, no longer than 5 feet in length, and the total diameter of the bundle should be 18 inches or less. Each bundle must not exceed 60 lbs. in weight.
If you have large diameter branches (over 2”), or a large quantity of yard waste, we suggest that you contact Allied Waste to inquire about a special pickup at a reduced cost or call a local tree service expert.
It is important that you do not include any metal products in your bags or bundles of yard waste because the metal can damage the tub grinder used to grind up the yard waste before it is professionally composted. The metal can also injure an employee. Also, make sure that you do not inadvertently throw paper, plastic, old shoes and other types of non-plant materials into your bagged yard waste. Other notes:
Stumps
Large stumps cannot be composted; therefore, the State of Illinois allows landfilling of stumps — place a “Refuse Only” sticker on a large tree stump and the garbage truck driver will pick up the stump.
Rocks, sod, earth, garden vegetables, mulching products, fruit and floral arrangements are considered refuse and should be disposed of with household refuse.
CHRISTMAS TREE RECYCLING PROGRAM
In late-December and January (depending on when the holiday falls), live Christmas trees are collected on two designated days. The program is free and you need not affix a refuse sticker to the tree on these special days. Hundreds of trees are collected annually; they are chipped and used as mulch around the base of acid-loving trees. Garland, holiday wreaths and other similar evergreen-type decorations are not collected because they contain wire and plastic.
