May 28th, 2009 Gypsy Scams
Several Lisle residents have recently been victims of daytime burglaries, sometimes called Gypsy burglaries. These burglars often pose as construction or utility workers, and sometimes wear hard hats, tool belts, orange safety vests, and carry walkie-talkie radios. One individual tries to distract the homeowner, while other people steal valuables from inside the home. The burglars can be males or females, and they primarily target elderly residents.
Within the last month, there have been two gypsy burglaries at homes in the area of Arbor View Drive and Warrenville Road. Approximately one year ago, a burglary occurred in the area of Ogden Avenue and Old Tavern Road.
To avoid becoming a victim, please keep these tips in mind:
- Never, for any reason, let an uninvited person into your home, even if they claim to work for the Village or other public utility, unless you are able to verify their identitiy.
- If you are approached by a stranger while in your yard, do not let them roam the property. This gives others the opportunity to enter your home while you are being distracted.
- Always keep your doors and windows locked, even while working in the yard.
- Call 911 immediately if any suspicious individuals come to your home. Attempt to remember the physical descriptions of the people and vehicle descriptions, including the licese plate number.
- If you see any suspicious vehicles in your neighborhood, please call 911 immediately.
- DO NOT keep large amounts of cash or expensive jewelry in your home.
- Please help protect your elderly neighbors by contacting the police immediately if you see suspicious people or vehicles around your neighbors' homes.
