As the Arboretum Village, Lisle recognizes responsible environmental stewardship as part of its mission in providing excellent municipal services to residents and businesses. The Village has expanded its environmental sustainability efforts to enhance health and safety; lessen the consumption of energy and fossil fuels; conserve water; reduce hazardous and solid waste and air pollution emissions.
Examples of the Village’s environmental initiatives include:
Offering curbside, multi-family, and commercial/industrial recycling opportunities for almost 20 years
· Co-hosting the 2008 Sustainable Cities Symposium presented by Illinois Lt. Governor Pat Quinn and the Illinois Green Governments Coordinating Council
· Receiving a "Clean Air Counts" award for the Village’s commitment to and promotion of clean air initiatives and reducing ozone in the Chicago region
· Purchasing Energy Star office equipment for municipal facilities
· Expanding the Village fleet of alternate fuel and hybrid vehicles
· Creating a Village Employee Sustainability Committee to problem-solve and determine ways in which Village operations can function in a more efficient, economic, and environmentally responsible manner
· Partnering with the Safer Pest Control Project and its Municipal IPM Policy Program to reduce the environmental impacts and health effects of pesticides by promoting safer alternatives to pesticides
· Maintaining an established parkway tree planting program
· Being desingated as a "Tree City USA" by the National Arbor Day Foundation every year ince 1992
· Co-sponsoring the “Rain Barrels of Lisle” summer art project
· Endorsing the Greenest Region Compact of Metropolitan Chicago
· Committing to stormwater management and pollution control through Village ordinance and public education
· Maintaining native landscaping throughout Village facilities and rights-of-way
· Forming a Village Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee and adopting a community bicycle and pedestrian plan
· Requiring storm water best management practices (green infrastructure) in development to improve both storm water management and water quality
· Implementing a residential CFL light bulb distribution program
. Creating a Rain Garden, to manage rain water from the Village Hall's roof
· Providing prescription drug disposal program for residents at Police Station
· Providing recycling containers for visitors to Downtown Lisle
· Establishing the “Green by Choice” Sustainable Lisle Business Partnership Program to encourage businesses to offer sustainable products and services, incorporate sustainable practices in their operations to reduce waste and conserve resources
