Building Permits

Please note that building permits are required for any alteration that changes the original design or floor plan of a structure, including:
  • Basement finishing
  • Decks
  • Fences
  • Fireplaces
  • Gazebos
  • Kitchen remodels
  • New buildings
  • Occupancy of commercial buildings and office spaces
  • Patios
  • Porches
  • Sheds
  • Some satellite receiving dishes
  • Windows and glass doors

Other Permit Requirements

Building permits are also required for adding electrical devices or plumbing fixtures, and replacing furnaces or water heaters. Other projects that require permits include water / sewer connections, signs, and projects that encroach into public right-of-way. Permits are required whether you do the work yourself or hire a contractor.


The Annual Fee Ordinance (PDF) is an ordinance establishing fees, charges, fines, penalties, and other regulatory measures. Please note that revisions to the annual fee ordinance were recently adopted and are effective as of May 1, 2016.  Relevant revisions to the Community Development fee schedule are as follows:  1) installation of a patio or deck - $100, 2) installation of a fence - $50, 3) new and replacement windows and glass doors - $50, 4) inspection or reinspection fee when work has not been properly completed - $50.
